A Look At Ethics in the New Digital Landscape

When

Fall 2020

Project Overview

97% of American teenagers are on one of the major social media platforms (Pew Research). My team members and I wanted to address the issues that social media presents by creating a magazine and iPad interaction. We covered three main topics: Censure, Detachment, and Mental Health. Due to the negative aspects of information spread on social media, my subtopics are Echo Chambers and Verificationism

Solution

Ech·o Cham·ber

an environment in which a person encounters only beliefs or opinions that coincide with their own, so that their existing views are reinforced and alternative ideas are not considered.

Sketches

Getting a handle on the layout started with a lot of sketches. For the concept of verificationism, I ended up exploring the idea of media posts coming out of a character's head. For echo chambers I was highly influenced by breaking excluding information in frames.

Building in ZBrush

This project was a great way to get better at ZBrush.

Inspiration

I pulled inspiration from a lot of different magazines and old newspapers

Takeaways

The concepts I chose were harder to communicate, so it took more iteration. However, I am happy I took on the challenge. If I were to do this project again, I would push the visuals further for the Echo Chambers piece.
