Project Overview
97% of American teenagers are on one of the major social media platforms (Pew Research). My team members and I wanted to address the issues that social media presents by creating a magazine and iPad interaction. We covered three main topics: Censure, Detachment, and Mental Health. Due to the negative aspects of information spread on social media, my subtopics are Echo Chambers and Verificationism.
Solution
Ech·o Cham·ber
an environment in which a person encounters only beliefs or opinions that coincide with their own, so that their existing views are reinforced and alternative ideas are not considered.
Oxford Languages
Ver·i·fi·ca·tion·ism
attempting to prove something true verses attempting to prove something false
Process
Sketches
Getting a handle on the layout started with a lot of sketches. For the concept of verificationism, I ended up exploring the idea of media posts coming out of a character's head. For echo chambers I was highly influenced by breaking excluding information in frames.
Building in ZBrush
This project was a great way to get better at ZBrush.
Inspiration
I pulled inspiration from a lot of different magazines and old newspapers
Takeaways
The concepts I chose were harder to communicate, so it took more iteration. However, I am happy I took on the challenge. If I were to do this project again, I would push the visuals further for the Echo Chambers piece.
